3rd English-language scientific conference for students and PhD candidates at the Poznań University of Life Sciences
On 8 May, the 3rd English-language scientific conference for students and PhD candidates at Poznań University of Life Sciences (3rd PULS-ISA Scientific Conference) took place, organised by the International Student Association at Poznań University of Life Sciences (PULS-ISA). The event was attended by over 90 guests, including 45 speakers, who presented their research and academic projects. The conference provided an opportunity to exchange experiences and showcase the potential of the PULS international student community.
Prof. Karolina Pawlak, PhD, Vice-Rector for International Relations, welcomed the participants joining the event remotely, emphasising the importance of international cooperation and academic exchange in expanding knowledge and building a modern academic environment. She also highlighted the vital role of international students, who, together with their Polish peers and postgraduate students, help shape the University’s community, enriching it with their academic engagement, experiences and diverse perspectives.
According to the event’s initiator, Prof. Jean Diatta, PhD, the Rector’s proxy for international students, the conference aims not only to highlight the importance of international academic cooperation, but above all to stimulate the academic engagement of students and doctoral candidates by inspiring them to compete in the field of science and awakening their passion for exploring new areas of knowledge and for creative and collaborative problem-solving.
The highlight of the event was, of course, the academic competition involving the presentation of research findings. Four sessions were organised: BSc Presentations (for undergraduate students and Erasmus+ students), MSc Presentations (for postgraduate students), Poster Oral Presentations, and PhD Presentations (for PhD candidates only). Each speaker was allocated a specific presentation time (8 minutes for full presentations, 4 minutes for oral poster presentations), with a 10-minute Q&A session following each presentation round. This format allowed for the concise presentation of information, whilst fostering engagement and academic discourse. The presentations covered a wide range of disciplines and included both English- and Polish-language degree programmes offered at PULS.
The standard of presentations at the conference was very high, resulting in six awards being presented to the best speakers:
- Award for BSc Presentation: Esther Obong Eyo (Economics and Finance Management in Agri-Food Sector).
Topic: The macroeonomic implications of household food waste - Award I: MSc Presentation Winner: Ola Busola Elizabeth (Animal Production Management).
Topic: Milk yield between Polish and Nigerian dairy systems - Award II: MSc Presentation Winner: Augustyn Crane (Geoinformation and Spatial Management).
Topic: The impact of noise on machine learning-based lake ice detection on Lake Śniardwy using Sentinel-1 SAR data - Award III: MSc Presentation Winner: Pius O. Omiunu (Biotechnology).
Topic: Hyperhomocysteinemia and fertility - Award for Poster Presentation Winner: Olabamiji Dolapo Olajumoke (Horticulture - Seed Science and Technology).
Topic: A Paper Review of Molecular Analysis of PCR-Based Markers Associated with Soybean Maturity Loci E1, E2, E3, E4, and E7 in F7 Breeding Materials - Award for PhD Presentation Winner: Maja Wojasiewicz (Biotechnology).
Topic: Homocysteine and homocysteine thiolactone contribute to Alzheimer's disease via TAU modifications in N2A-APPswe cells.
The 3rd academic conference for PULS students and PhD candidates provided a forum for the exchange of ideas, collaboration and the presentation of research by young academics. The event also highlighted the vital role played by PULS-ISA in bringing together the international and Polish academic communities and in supporting the development of students and PhD candidates at PULS.
“On behalf of the organisers, I would like to extend special thanks to the Vice-Rector for International Relations, Prof. Karolina Pawlak, PhD, and to Mr Paweł Dowejko and Mr Bartosz Zgarda, for their boundless care and support. We express our deep gratitude to Ms Agnieszka Domaszewicz for her exceptional commitment to the graphic design of the conference materials. PULS-ISA also extends its warmest congratulations and appreciation to everyone involved in the preparation and running of the conference, the active speakers, the winners and the members of the jury,” concludes Prof. Jean Diatta.
